'People are good, it’s got what I need.'
Sean recently moved into Roma’s latest social housing complex. He had been living in a National Rental Assistance Scheme home for 8 years, but when it transferred to the private market, he was unable to afford the rent or find an alternative.
'I decided when the prospects were nil, I’d just get some camping stuff and go into survival mode,' Sean said. 'It was an experience of all emotions.'
Sean was living in Chinchilla when he was contacted by Community Housing Limited and the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works about available social housing in Roma.
'I got a call from the lovely Tanya, saying "Come to Roma." And I said, "With bells on." And here we are today.'
Sean said he’s settling into life in Roma.
'I love it,' he said. 'I’m very simple – all I need is a Woolies, a chemist … And Tanya and her organisation – outstanding. Outstanding.'
Tanya said the Roma complex is home to older people and those with varying levels of mobility, with access to a range of support services.
'Sean was the first person we offered a place in the property to,' Tanya said.
With Sean’s permission, Tanya was also able to arrange for the Betta Electrical in Roma to donate a washing machine, which was delivered just in time for Sean’s birthday.
This social housing complex is owned and managed by Community Housing Limited and delivered in partnership with the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works.
